West Islip Teenager Dies in Collision

A West Islip woman died early Tuesday morning in a head-on collision with a truck in West Islip, Suffolk County police said.

Nineteen-year-old Julia Schweers, a 2014 graduate of St. John the Baptist High School, was fatally injured in crash that occurred just before 6:00 a.m. at the intersection of Higbie Lane and Union Boulevard, Newsday reports. She was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where she died, police said.

According to Newsday, Julia Schweers was driving north on Higbie Lane when her 2011 Toyota Camry collided with the 2005 Mitsubishi box truck, which was trying to turn left onto Union Boulevard. The driver of the truck, Antonio Reyes, 45, of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, was not injured in the crash and no charges have been filed. Schweers was killed about half a mile from home but police do not know whether was traveling to or from home at the time of the accident, News 12 reports.

Schweers’ father, Keith, was the football coach at St. John the Baptist from 2007 to 2013. He is also a former New York City police officer who was shot and wounded on the job just months before Julia was born.
