motorcyclecrash-e1359132327973A motorcyclist from Medford died Sunday in East Islip after his bike struck a vehicle.

According to Newsday.com, a 2012 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Christopher Gonzalez, 21, struck a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant just west of Exit 46, Carleton Avenue. The driver of the Mitsubishi, Mary Paniccia, 63, and her 13-year-old grandson were not hurt.

Gonzalez was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with serious head injuries. He died on Monday, Newsday.com reported.

The accident closed a section of Sunrise Highway until Monday morning, according to Newsday.com.

Sunrise Highway has been home to numerous crashes in recent days. On July 11, a police officer was seriously injured when a pickup truck slammed into his police car in Holbrook. Just before the crash, the police received calls about a swerving truck that was weaving in and out of traffic. That vehicle turned out to be the same truck that struck the officer’s car, LongIsland.News12.com.com reported.

The driver of the truck, Jason Rosenzweig, 23, suffered minor injuries in the crash, LongIsland.News12.com reported.

Then, on July 18, police tracked a man by helicopter that was driving on the Sunrise Highway until he crashed near exit 56 at 6:30 p.m. The driver was taken into police custody after being transported to the hospital, according to Newsday.com.
