Two people were seriously injured after a car slammed through the front window of a Trader Joe’s store on Long Island over the weekend. One person remained in critical condition after the accident.
According to a Long Island Newsday report, the crash occurred at the Oceanside location of Trader Joe’s on Friday afternoon, when the store was busy and filled with customers. At least 12 people sustained injuries in the accident.
Among those injured was a man who was reportedly run over by the vehicle that crashed through the storefront. Another person was pinned against a wall inside the store. At least 10 others were injured in the accident as the crash caused merchandise inside the store to scatter.
Long Island Newsday spoke with witnesses who said the vehicle crashed through the front of the store where customers were lined up at registers looking to check out their purchases. Broken glass caused some serious cut injuries and other customers and store employees reported head injuries in the fracas that ensued.
An emergency official in charge of the scene told Long Island Newsday that the driver “appeared disoriented” and said that before crashing into the store, the driver hit three parked cars in the parking lot of Trader Joe’s. The driver then shifted the car forward and ran through the front of the store, jumping a curb and going over a walkway first.
