fatal_crash_malta_nyAlcohol is believed to have played a role in the death of a Long Island man who was killed in a one-car crash.

A Long Island man was arrested and charged with drunken driving after an accident resulted in the death of his passenger shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday in Shirley, CBS New York reported.

According to the Suffolk County police, the driver, identified as a 27-year-old from Shirley, was heading southbound in his 2000 Lincoln on Grand Boulevard when he lost control of the car and hit a tree. A 29-year-old passenger was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver was also rushed to the hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries, CBS New York reported.

Last week an 80-year-old Smithtown woman was killed in a car crash that also injured two others in Hauppauge.

Suffolk County police a 51-year-old man was driving his Toyota Corolla westbound on Veterans Memorial Highway with his mother when their vehicle collided with a blue 2014 Ford Mustang on Sunday, September 28 at 8:30 p.m., LongIslandPress.com reported. The Mustang was heading eastbound and making a left onto Route 111.

The victim was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she died from her injuries on Monday.

The driver of the Corolla and the driver of the Mustang, identified as a 23-year-old woman from Ronkonkoma, were taken to the same hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, LongIslandPress.com reported.

Forth Squad detectives continue to investigate the crash.
